Re: Recently Viewed Films - Reviewed
Metropolis
I never thought I'd ever watch a silent film that would manage to stun me with its beauty, amaze me with its effects, make my heart beat alongside its score or make my eyes well up with tears. The fact that almost half the film is lost is such a tragedy, and any lesser production would be crippled by it. But somehow Metropolis manages to wring emotion and artistry from its every frame and tell the story as if the production was still whole.
Like Barry Lyndon, this is a film where the images are composed so beautifully and so brilliantly that you could easily have most scenes hanging as pictures on your wall. Even now, 82 years after its original release, the film shines with a breathtakingly brilliant artistic glow. I can only hope that there is truth in the rumours that the entire film has been found and may one day be restored to its full glory. For now we are left with what may perhaps be only a shadow of the film itself, but a shadow that not only covers the entire history of science fiction cinema, but one that easily trumps 99% of all films created this century.
10/10

I think we should stop scoring films out of anything.

Oy Mr. Film Student, I disagree.
Seriously though, I know scores are inaccurate, but they provide a good basis for comparison. And let's get things straight - it is ultimately the score that sums up a typical review.
PS: Batman Begins > The Dark Knight, to join the earlier debate.

No question about BB >TDK
BUT! Its not that scores are innacurate, not at all. Its just, is Major reviewing the films (as in, how valuable is the film, how much is it worth...) or is he reviewing his experience of the film... Take TDK for example. Upon first viewing, i gave that a 10, no doubt, but i was reviewing my experience of the film. Studying the text, and reviewing it it comes closer to an 8 (for me). They are very different things.
And like, people have a penchant for reviewing "highbrow" films higher than blockbuster ones, because they consider them to of more worth.
AND
Majors review was overwhelmingly positive, and the 10/10 made what was otherwise a very articulate piece of writing into something else. It just wasnt necessary.

Sorry, I misunderstood you at first. Now I see where you are coming from completely, and I agree in that respect.

I guess that although I review films primarily based on my experience of them, I am at times awed by the influence and impact they've had on the film business. But I stand by my score, Metropolis is a masterpiece.

I dont doubt it! Trust you implicitly, i just genuinely believe we should stop tacking on a number to a review.

Hey it's A Clockwork Orange.
I'm going to stick by scoring, it's easier to communicate how much I got out of a film that way because I'm not as analytically minded about the medium as I'd like to be.
Hey it's a 5/5.
Great bolshy yarblockos, what an amazing film!

Night of the Living Dead
Although there's no doubt that this film established the zombie arch-type as well as doing its fair share of revolutionizing it ends up being more a relic than an immortal classic.

I think some people give discussions like this high ratings just because they feel like they're inclined to as a lover of discussion.mcgugan wrote:Rebellious Backbencher wrote:Chicks dig this discussion.

Going to see Up later. I really can't wait cos I've been looking forward to it for maybe a year, and I managed to resist the urge of watching it online. Now I get to experience it on the big screen and in 3D.
Verdict later.
