Final Fantasy
Anyone else getting it next week?
I just got an email saying my copy was preparing for dispatch. 4 years ago I would have been pretty excited right now, but I think this will be the first game in the series that I don't like, all impressions from the Jap version sound awful.
And Edge gave it a 5/10

Re: Final Fantasy
Gamer.no gave it a 9, saying that while one might miss the towns and being able to explore, the product that IS there is very good in its own right.
My sister is going gaga for this, so I'll probably borrow it off her when she's finished it 3 times.

Re: Final Fantasy
I'll be picking it up at midnight launch very excited, even though the exploration aspect is probably going to be given back to us in some money milking dlc...

Re: Final Fantasy
Mine was dispatched yesterday.
Edge have scored some games horribly the gen, the review itself didn't seem to match up with the 5, but I take reviews (mostly Edge's) like a pinch of salt anyway. (Halo 3 - 10, Mirror's Edge - 5, Bayonetta - 10, Mass Effect - 7. Mirror's Edge and Mass Effect are two of my favourites this gen, while Halo 3 and Bayonetta are not).
That's not to say I'm not taking on board what the critics have had to say - even though it's nice to have those extras, I rarely do side-quests, the mini-games, etc. I normally just get on with the story. I know this won't be so great on a second playthrough though.
Anyway, Edge gave FFX a 6 and I still thought it was great. I know Edge gave FFXII a 9 and I only played that for a few hours before never playing it again.
I know your favourite game of all time is FFVIII, Maze, and that got a few lukewarm, terrible reviews, just like most of the series has.
Everyone really is split down the middle with it comes to Final Fantasy, and I think I'm more on this terrible side of liking the more linear, cinematic RPG.

Re: Final Fantasy
Yeah im not to bothered about the Edge review, they go to extremes just to be Edge. I just thought it was funny seeing a high profile game being shit on after the way reviewers have behaved towards big games this gen.
Still though, I do spend more time doing the exploration/side quest stuff in jrpg's than I do on the main story, so im expecting this to be one of my least favorite FF's, especially coming straight after XII. Hopefully the linearity is being overblown and it's comparable to X.

Re: Final Fantasy
Mine should be here tomorrow. It was dispatched on Friday, so realistically...
I've bought the Xbox version though, so I may be at risk of slightly aliased hair texture! which according to the internet will completely ruin my enjoyment of the game and make me break down and cry.
It's also squawking about the lack of towns. Which I don't care about. Linearity can be fun. Most massive open end games I play bore me to tears. I like direction.

Re: Final Fantasy
For me tomorrow could be something like this:
7:00am - get up, get ready for work
7:30am - arrive at work
12:00pm - 1:00pm (depends how busy work is really) - leave work, arrive home, play Final Fantasy XIII
Or it could be something more like this:
12:00pm - wake up, play Final Fantasy XIII
7:00am - get up, get ready for work
7:30am - arrive at work
12:00pm - 1:00pm (depends how busy work is really) - leave work, arrive home, play Final Fantasy XIII

Re: Final Fantasy
The first 2-3 hours of this are as linear as an JRPG can get, but once you gain Pangrimd Shift and that, it's great. I was really worried for a bit, but I'm really happy with it now.
I don't think I need to say how good it looks. It's so bloody vibrant, looks flawless.

Re: Final Fantasy
I don't know what to make of it tbh.
+ Combat is awesome.
+ Graphics & art direction are great.
+ Music is great.
+ Lightning is a badass, Sazh is cool.
- It really is just a bunch of narrow hallways.
- The characters, apart from the 2 mentioned, are just awful so far.

Re: Final Fantasy
I think it left the battle introduction (Pre-paradigm) a little long for my liking.
There's only so much you can watch Squeaky Wench '10 wave a fishing rod around and around as the sole thing she can do before it gets boring.
Aside from the slow start, which virtually every RPG has, it's utterly engrossing me so far. Disc 1 was cleared in about 8 hours though, but the pacing is pretty quick for the first lot of chapters, apparently.

Re: Final Fantasy
I'm just over 17 hours in now.
I'm getting a bit fed up with all the party separated, but I really like the battle system and I've leveled up quite a bit now, so I have some awesome abilities.
Edge said it takes 25 hours before the game really opens up, and until you get everybody in the party. I'm real anxious to do so, but thinking about trudging through another 8 hours of linear paths isn't exactly making me enthusiastic.

Re: Final Fantasy
I just don't really see how this game took so long to make.
It's a nice looking game, but that mostly comes down to the great art, technically it's no where near Uncharted 2 or God of War. FFXII took fucking ages to make too, but when you played it, it was pretty obvious why. This, not so much...
Still it is a fun game. I just think it could have been so much more if Square weren't so lame these days.

Re: Final Fantasy
Ha ha, yeah, I was thinking the same thing earlier. I can't imagine how long it would have taken if they had added towns and all that.
Maybe they are saving it all for Versus.
Anyway, I actually wasn't 17 hours in; I was only 13 hours in! Still, I've finally got to play as Fang, her and Lightning are deadly together.

Re: Final Fantasy
Fang is my favourite character.
I've got to the point where you can finally have whatever party you want, right before some big ass boss that drove my friend insane with defeat (And for the record, I killed first time)
Lighting, Vanille and Fang are unstoppable.

I just realised who Vanille reminds me of.
The retarded girl played by Charlize Theron in Arrested Development.
