Current Affairs

Post by Seany C on Thu Aug 20, 2009 1:39 pm

A thread for the discussion of news and polotics among other things. Might be good to get some discussion just about the days news.

Here's the story that gripped me most today:
http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/War-Veteran-George-Gibb-Brutally-Attacked-After-Scattering-Late-Wifes-Ashes/Article/200908315365861?lpos=UK_News_Carousel_Region_3&lid=ARTICLE_15365861_War_Veteran_George_Gibb_Brutally_Attacked_After_Scattering_Late_Wifes_Ashes

Makes you fucking sick, don't it? That picture makes me so angry. I hope the people who did this are caught. They might get a fuck all sentencing but hopefully it'll be in the papers and everyone will know their faces. Scum... fucking scum...

Also, who's routing for the robbers in this 40 mil gem heist? I think the way they did it was brilliant, I hope they get away with it because they did it in a professional and calculating manner, not the rush jobs your average goon tries to pull off.

Should the Lockerbie Bomber be allowed to go home to die? I think this release on 'compassionate grounds' crap is nonsense. I'm not really that passionate about the story because it was before my time but I think he should just be left in his cell without treatment so he can die naturally of cancer. It's a small amount of suffering in comparison to that he's inflicted on his victims and their families.

The first story really is disgraseful. Why would someone want to do that?

I think the bomber should be allowed tbh.

Lockerbie Bomber should be and thankfully has been allowed home. If you do nothing about suffering then the judicial system sinks down to his level.

Definitely rooting for the thieves, that was some Ocean's Eleven shit they pulled there.

Shame for the guy who got mugged, but I don't think that would really warrant the return of the death penalty. I'm glad we've been rid of such an affront to humanity for this long.

Don't get me started on the death penalty. Why are we such a bloodthirsty nation? "Kill the crooks, fucking kill 'em! Kill 'em all!"

The reason why, Sean, is that it's a deterrent. With a death penalty, there wouldn't be as many crooks.

The whole death penalty idea isn't for the lulz.

I think capital punishment is barbaric and self contradicting and do you really want to trust this government with the right to kill people even if they are criminals? Also isn't it illogical to fight death with death? That's like using a turd to scrub shit off your shoe. The death penalty brings down all those involved (including people who advocate it such as yourself) down to the level of a murderer. Be bigger than revenge.

What about locking him up in a prison for a few years with some hard cunts that will rape him every day because he's disgraced one of "our old boys"?

Wait a second!

Smile

Apparently it costs more to deal with all of the maintenance and PR guff surrounding killing institutions than it does to keep every single one of the potential executed alive in prison for thirty years with bread and water. Also, the deterrent effect is moot, usually makes no difference and in some cases (extreme sexual abuse/assault on multiple counts etc.) actually encourages the criminal to kill the victim(s) so as to silence the only witness.

We'd be striding towards totalitarianism if everycunt that beat up a pensioner got killed for it.

Tough question, and I don't feel I'm qualified to answer it (not that that's stopped me in the past, or even in this thread).

Fuck it, I have an opinion.

No, there should be leeway to reform your character. You really think that a crippled old codger who was put away for murder thirty years ago a) poses the same threat to society and b) doesn't feel fucking sorry for his actions?

Incidently, who was held responsible for the shooting down of IR655, an A300 Airbus on its way from Tehran to Dubai, killing 290 civilians? It was shot down inside Iranian airspace by an American missile. The commander of the ship that launched the missile was given a medal!! Of course that is a different story. GOD BLESS THE WEST, AND NO PLACE ELSE!

Ok then, should we be more strict on the sentencing, make 16 years mean 16 years not let them out in 8 for good behaviour. If you've been sentenced 16 years, you should be in for 16 years no matter what.

I believe that if you violate someone human rights then you should lose yours, an eye for an eye, If someone broke into my house and stabbed my missis I should not be punished for kicking seven layers of shit out of the guy before calling the police if you get my drift.

As for the Bomber I don't believe he should be allowed out, he killed far to many people to deserve compassion. You should be punished for your crimes.

There are two many people who keep getting rehabilitated and then released and they go straight back to jail a year or so later.

I am all up for shorted sentences and compassionate grounds if are prisons were a deterrent (for to a cell with crap food and fuck all to do but work on boring menial task that may benefit us.)

Fisheggz, I think I remember you saying you suffered from dyslexia? I have to say your spelling is pretty impeccable now.

not quite a good enough punishment gdf

still i dont think for taking a life there is a severe enough punishment. no amount of jail time can ever make it right, i remember recently a guy was released who killed a friend of mine drink driving when i was like 7, only served 9 years. but i doubt even if he stayed in for 50 i wouldnt make a difference.

so the lockerbie bomber will die of cancer, shame he couldnt have done it in a small cell, without treatment, in agony like he deserves.

What's with all the bloodlust lol

I just don't think vengeance executed without compunction is the most suitable way to deal with crime.

Lol bob it be the wonders of checking my spelling with wonderful tools installed on my computer Big smile

Also as far as killing people goes for a crime I believe it should only be reserved for the very most serious cases and should not be a done lightly. I do reckon though that if prisons were horrible shit places to stay people would not be so keep on re offending.
