Re: Religion
Quite so. But let's bear in mind that the parents fully believe that otherwise they may be commiting their children to eternal firey damnation. I disagree with it but I can understand why it happens.

Re: Religion
It's a dilemma for staunchly theistic parents, but I think it's irresponsible to "teach" children a religion, just as much as it is to "teach" them atheism. As someone already said, expose them to it when they're old enough and they'll probably laugh in your face.

Re: Religion
Yeah, I wouldn't preach atheism on my child. I'd be neutral. I would ask them what their views were and explain my reasons for siding with atheism though, but I might get a christian friend to defend christianity so he gets a neutral influence if said friend was willing.
Re: Religion
I doubt I'll mention religion at all, and when junior gets home from school and heard Billy talking about Jesus Christ I'll sit down and explain the concept of religion. Until that, I'll leave it out I reckon.

Re: Religion
I'll probably bring them up on the basics, put them on the right moral trail and let them decide at around 14-15. I'll probably have stopped going to church at that stage but start again for a while with the kids.

Re: Religion
i have to say that, even though i was christened a catholic, i have no interest in religion whatsoever, my religion was forced on to me, not by my parants, but by my grandad, who was a complete controll freak, may i just say, may sound a little unfair, but im glad he's dead, bastard.

Re: Religion
Funny thing actually I go to a catholic college (although I'm not religious in the slightest) and we were given coursework in graphics to design a range of posters, leaflets etc.. warning people of the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases. However because of the catholic ethos we weren't allowed to advise any form of contraception. It basically fucked up my whole design idea (involving some space invaders and condom shields but that's a story for another day).
So yeah, bloody religion.

Re: Religion
So, can we conclude that our only pro-religion member is Don't Look Angry, Groovy on the fence and everyone else pro-atheism? Looks like this will be a pretty secular forum...
Thank God.

Re: Religion
I feel sorry for people that are religious. Man, especially extremists. What a waste of life.

Hey I wasn't pro-religion I was just arguing on its behalf. There's no point of having a discussion about religion if no ones arguing for it. I'm with Bob though.

Re: Religion
I'm not a religious person but I'm a spiritual person. I just see a lot of spirituality and as my viable alternative to praying. I also take it all very metaphorically, which is as it is intended really, just as a way to relax and chill out. Like, I don't really believe in all the mochsa stuff, but it provides a decent way to just sit back and recover in tough situations.

Re: Religion
I watched it and it was pretty weak, definitely less interesting than I thought. Bill Maher is a bit of a prick, really. An Israeli supporting prick at that.

Re: Religion
Download or purchase? The £11 equals about £6 for me if we consider the difference in income.

Re: Religion
I heard it's biased, only shows the crazies who aren't a true representative sample and is a bit pretentious.
Re: Religion
Started streaming it somewhere to see if I liked it enough to pay >£10 for on iTunes. I didn't, and just to grudge Maher I watched the whole thing because it was at least mildly interesting.

Re: Religion
Moar Limmy.
Discovered something else on the morality point. 75% of the US population are Christian. 75% of the prison population are also Christian. No big deal, eh? Turns out Atheists, who make up between 10 and 20% of the US population depending on how many are "in the closet", make up just 0.2% of the prison population.
