Uncharted 2
I assume every PS3 owner here has played the beta now. What are your first impressions? I think the multiplayer's fun enough but doesn't do anything too special. It feels like a dumbed down MGO but much prettier and colourful. I think I'll be playing the co-op a lot more. That's fun as shit, in fact anyone here wanna co-op some time?
Oh, also, I got artsy in cinema mode. Post apocalyptic comic book style, oh yeah! They aren't posed btw, I just used cinema mode after my first ever TDM.

I really like the beta, far more than I had expected. That I'm awesome at it helps, I'm never good at online games but for some reason I'm always top three in this with a k/d of 2/1.

I could have summarised it in a couple of sentences for you dude.
Worth playing for yourself though.

Re: Uncharted 2
I borrowed it from a friend today aswell. It's visually stunning, but I was expecting that. Some of the vistas are incredible, especially from atop the fort (can't remember what it's called) looking out across the ocean. The story is great - I can't wait to get the the next bit to find out what happens. You can certainly see the influences that National Treasure had on this.
I'm not enjoying the actual shooting mechanics, though, which is a shame. It just feels like a chore, conserving ammo, surviving wave after wave of enemies. It's no fun just emptying 5 or 6 bullets into someone with a pistol to kill them, the enemies seem to hug the cover too much for my liking, and there's often a lot of stuff in the way which results in a large amount of wasted bullets. More emphasis on assault rifles would be nice (but ammo for these is often scarce than for the pistol) along with some wider open areas giving me a bit more freedom. I don't think CQB really works in any 3PS, unfortunately a lot of the shootouts seem to be this. The platforming is fun but the joystick obviously doesn't like me because I find myself leaping off a ledge to my death despite pressing the other direction. There is also the odd cover glitch but nothing too bad. It has a fairly steep learning curve aswell, I've had to knock it down to easy for some sections.
I am confident, though, that the second is going to be so much better than this. Just from the multiplayer, it looks even prettier, handles better and the enemies have a bit more variety to them.

Re: Uncharted 2
Moozo and I seem to be on the same page. I'm just about 15 minutes ahead of when you zip line next to Elena's parachute so far for the record. The visuals really are special, that boat at the beginning had some really fucking pretty high res textures (the kind that appear to be commonplace in Uncharted 2) and the natural environment really does look splendid compared to other games' attempts at jungle levels and vegetation. I'd say the graphics were the best I've seen on PS3 if it weren't for Uncharted 2. Next, it's so refreshing to have a game that actually makes you laugh, audibly laugh through dialogue, not ragdoll effects or comical weapons like a turd cannon or something and it has a decent narrative so far. The combat sucks really. When you're shooting unarmoured pirates in shorts and a vest it's less believable they take 6 or so bullets to the general chest area that if they were swat troopers or something and the cover combat is just slow. I actually dread combat sections, but the platforming, exploration and general atmosphere the rest of the game supplies make up for the mediocre gunfights though the controls could of done with more tweaking. My favourite moment so far was exploring the submarine, a perfect example of giving the user a cinematic experience without taking control away from the player. Very atmospheric.
Luckily, from an Uncharted co-op session or two it would appear all my complaints have been fixed and those cinematic moments where you retain control appear to be littered around every corner if the trailers and gameplay footage are anything to go by. This great game whets my appetite for the excellent one approaching.
Those £3 triggers are an essential purchase as far as I'm concerned too. Makes them better than 360 triggers, no lie.

Re: Uncharted 2
I thought the original Uncharted was solid enough for a single play-through, got bored trying to go through it again. The story was a bit predictable I thought, but the tongue in cheek approach meant the cliches were more of a joke than a lack of creative thought. Combat left a lot to be desired, the game essentially got by on atmosphere and looks. Probably a 7 or a high 6. I hope Gamer.no is wrong about the sequel.

Re: Uncharted 2
I agree with the atmosphere/appearance side to it Iain. It is truly beautiful - a work of art. But imagine if it wasn't, if it was averagely pretty, and the writing and story was non-existent. The whole thing would be balls.
It does seem they have addressed this though. It definitely felt like a step backwards from Among Thieves' beta to Drake's Fortune.

Re: Uncharted 2
The presentation is part and parcel of the overall package. I definitely agree on the rough score Iain gave for the first one, but I hope the beta's improvements ring true throughout.

Just seen that the special edition is only 45 pounds at Game, which is a bummer cos I've got a hefty credit note at Gamestation.

Finished. 7/10 from me. The end and the last few chapters were a letdown.
