Gaming back stories Empty Gaming back stories

Do y'all ever create imaginary back stories to the goings-on in your videogames?
I used to do this to make up for poor AI in my head, or to add additional stipulations in a game I found too easy, but now it's just my go-to means of playing videogames. Only the most rigorously enforced narratives are safe from my imagination chipping in a plot device or two. For instance, if I get into a police chase in GTA I'm inclined to satisfy my curiosity by making up a story about why I'm going where I'm going, and how the police managed to get involved.
On Smackdown! 2007 me and my friends have jointly invested in a back story, creating a team of wrestlers who share the second name "Mayweather". One of my mates recently created his own guy and added increasingly ridiculous storylines to the proceedings, much to the annoyance of the rest. Pretty funny stuff.

Only when I was younger. Mostly on Driver I think. I grew out of it really.

Totally, I tend to do it in Footy Manager games more than anything.

The thing is, I get bogged down in the logic. So for example, on Footy Manager, if 'Ryan Casey' takes over Bolton, I start to wonder why they have employed this virtual nobody.

GTA is brilliant for doing it in, might grab San Andreas off the MP actually.

Haha, I know! I imagined that the chairman was in deep shit because he had employed a close personal friend at Celtic. Then I kicked ass, and all was forgiven. Of course it helped that I'm sellick minded.

I often have an inner monologue going for my character in Oblivion when I play, same for games like Fable and Mass Effect. Helps make the game become even more immersive.

Oblivion is an excellent game for it. I haven't done it much on Mass Effect yet surprisingly.

I didn't do it on Mass Effect either, I think it's because there's already a clear story in place which was probably better than whatever I'd come up with on the fly.

Me and my mate also have a huge homoerotic Gears of War backstory, which is quite disturbing, yet funny when on co-op at the same time.

In Mass Effect I personalized my Sheperd and did some of my own backstory and made up reactions for the most part. But I didn't do it as much as in Oblivion.

I don't tend to apply much of my own creation to characters outside the confines of the gameworld. Then again, my short-lived Oblivion diary was very much fanfic. As a child I liked to imagine what lay beyond the boundaries of the game world. Part of the magic of Ocarina of Time was pondering what the world was like on the other side of the fence. I got my answers with Majora's Mask, which satisfied me in my own special way.

There's a lot of in-depth theory that could be explored here, but I can't quite work out where to start.

i like to imagine liberty city in gta IV is actually a microcosmic world being ruled by some unknown force, and it's really a lone island on a flooded planet. i fly out to sea sometimes to see if there's anything beyond the fog, but i eventually have to give up my mission and return to the mainland before i starve to death.
it helps rid me of the guilt of murdering countless innocents as they're all just pawns of the controller, and i'm mercifully ending their painful and puppet-like existence.

When I play GTA IV I pretend I have a 12 inch dick. Doesn't really change how I play it though, except I run a little more to the left.
