Politics
Who here takes an interest in politics in any capacity? If you do, where are you politically? I'm in the rather unworkable position of being both a socialist and libertarian, but justify the untenability of my position by calling myself an idealist. If push came to shove, it would be "workers of the world unite" time, baby.
I know that Sean is a strong libertarian and probably somewhere on the right economically, and Paul appears to be a whiny libertarian centre-leftist
I'll probably get told I'm very wrong, but let's push on.
Anyone else? Just so you know, I have a special interest in UK politics, and like a little sadact listen to the Guardian's Politics Weekly and PMQs recordings without fail. Question Time and Channel Four News are favourite programmes of mine. Oh, as is Fox News, consistently the funniest channel on Sky.

Re: Politics
Happy birthday Fraser.
Whiny centre-leftist just about covers it, though British politics doesn't really hold my interest (at least, not as much as it should).
I also find myself in a slew of similarly unworkable contradictions politically - for instance, I believe the US to be the best country in the world but I also harbour a moderate support for Hamas and, I dare say, more sympathy than the average dude for the likes of Osama Bin Laden.

Since you have more recently exposed your Americaphilia, I was beginning to think it sat uncomfortably with your duty-bound distaste for Western attitudes and culture pollution.

Re: Politics
I've only recently started researching Norwegian politics so as to determine which party suits me. And I've come to the conclusion that I'm leaning towards the right, especially economically. I reckon our country needs to start introducing private schools to try and create some competetition for the shitty public ones, or at least offer something better for those with sufficient talent. I'm sick of the socialist view of treating everyone equal in school, for it caters only to the disadvantaged and bars those whose talent exceeds the teaching to do anything about it. Everyone is to be kept at the same level. Period.
And the thought of a society leaning towards communism depresses me greatly. Let people be what they can be without being held back by society's desire to cut everyone down to the same height. And stop treating people who have accumulated a moderate amount of wealth as targets for insane tax rules.
I guess this makes me a libertarian?

The tax system is fair in my view. Those who get the most out of society have to give the most back.

I love Norway's current government, Red-Green Coalition, yeah! I knew you'd be quite right leaning though, you sort of fit the stereotype.Kaptain Kaviar wrote:I've only recently started researching Norwegian politics so as to determine which party suits me. Private schools are an absolutely abhorrent idea to me. The notion that society's wealthiest should have privileged access and be able to buy an education makes me

I'm more leaning towards the right as well, I have more of a conservative view on my shoulders.

Re: Politics
Nationalistic attitudes can tie just as readily with the right as the left, in many cases more so. Callum will make a pretty crap Scot because we're all raving lefties up here.

Aye, I was just parodying Callum's neo-nazi admissions in the past.
As for my beliefs, they vary too much to be completely honest. Some of my de jure opinions are around the middle, whereas de facto, they are wavering more towards the left/right.

My Grandad was a Socialist party leader in Fife for a number of years, may have something to do with the fact that he was a miner
Edit: Also I hate the Scottish Nationalist party with a passion, because their ideas of getting Scotland would ruin the country, everyone knows it and the only reason they were voted in was because the other parties are also filled with knobs.

Re: Politics
Not in all respects, no, but we'd be able to steer clear of Tory rule forever and guide the welfare state further to the left, take control of our own interests and spending and re-nationalise more industry. The next step would be republic status, the dead albatross that is the royal family would be off our shoulders within a decade. We have the oil, don't forget that England. Also, we'd get some fucking respect. We're seen as a region of England's great empire. Anglocentric broadcasts would end. We'd regain something that's been absent for a long time: pride.

Tory Government = Bad Times in Northern Ireland
I have the greatest of respects for Tony Blair as a politician and a prime minister. Thought he was the best out of a poor bunch. David Cameron has already stated his pro-unionist views, so I doubt there will be much progress if they get into power.

Perhaps an independent Scotland would pave the way for a united Irish republic. I'm definitely with the catholics on that one.

You've pretty much summed up all the points Scottish Nationalists have hit me with throughout the years, Fraser.
Some are bollocks (Good luck setting up a republic upon dying oil supplies and not much else), others are motivated by blind anti-English sentiment (The royal family really has fuck all with the argument), and more still are ridiculously minor points to be used to cut ourselves off from our neighbours at precisely the wrong time (English commentators at the World Cup aren't that hateful).
There is, of course, the likes of the welfare state point, which I have to take on board as a valid point but disagree nevertheless - we're far left enough as it is IMO.

I think we should tell England to fuck off and be pals with Scandinavia, they know the score when it comes to welfare. The Union is at breaking point.
I'll let Limmy take over for now.

England: I'm going out to the pub ma, gonna score me some hot bitches.
America: Okay, play safe and don't do anything I haven't said you can do. Scotland, are you still on the fucking computer? Why can't you go out and get a nice girlfriend?
Scotland: I fucking hate England.

Man, I can't wait for Monday. Election day! Anything can happen... I'm looking forward to seeing if we can get a centre-right wing government in place and get rid of the sociopaths, sorry, I mean socialists.

No, don't get rid of the awesome Red-Green Coalition! Why would you when your social welfare is the best in the world and targets the root causes of poverty?
