Betting on the Oscars

Post by DanglyBrasco on Tue Dec 29, 2009 7:37 pm

Okay, so im not a betting man, but i'm gonna try and bet on the oscars this year, so a few things.

Is it possible to put a bet on befor ethe nominations are announced?

Secondly, im going Best Film: The Hurt Locker, and maybe Best Director for Biegelow or Cameron. Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that many of the films soon to be released, like Up In The Air, The Lovely Bones etc. will be the real contenders. Didn't think much of The Hurt Locker to be honest.

It'll be a scam if Cameron gets Best Director...

From what i hear the Lovely Bones is getting a bit of a kicking from the NY and LA times, usually a good indicator. Up in the air, im not sure about.

Hurt Locker was my FOTY, seems to tick all the right boxes when picking best film.

Then there's also The Road which I'm dying to see. Would be amazing if Up made a Best Picture nomination... fuck best animated movie!

Absolutely, it really really should, said the sameabout Wall-E last year, now the category has been expanded, UP should really be in.

Im going to see Nine tomorow, hopefully that will be a contender too, but again, getting a kicking from all these "critics".

Best film: I have high hopes for The Lovely Bones. Reading the book atm, really great stuff. Avatar will most likely get a nomination at least, Shutter Island, The Hurt Locker...

Director is a huge one this year. Cameron, Jackson, Scorsese, Bigelow...I did like The Hurt Locker a lot, apart from the ending.

I hope that Up stands a chance in the best picture department. It deserves it. Definitely my FOTY. A tough one to call...

Up In The Air will probably grab Best Picture. Or perhaps Precious.

I really hope Christoph Waltz gets best supporting actor.

I think Bigelow should, and probably will, grab the award.

As for 10 films up for nomination, wow, really wasn't aware of that. Real open race this year. In that case, adding to my previous list:

Precious
Up In The Air
Invictus
The Hurt Locker
Avatar
Inglourious Basterds
A Single Man
Nine
The Messenger
An Education

Invictus got some disappointing reviews actually. Although they were probably American reviewers who have no clue about rugby anyway...Not that it would improve the quality of the film, but I'm sure it helps. I'm looking forward to it anyway.

The rest of the noms are up at http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=26896

In bold are my predictions as to which film will win. Note, I don't think anyone expected Avatar to be quite this big critically and commercially, so I'm edging for that over The Hurt Locker/Up In The Air to win, with Bigelow's nod coming in the form of Best Director.

Also, these aren't my personal preferences of winners, more my genuine prediction.

Heres what i think, really can't argue with you much, though i put Bullock for best Actress, and Jeff Bridges for Actor for funs. I was very very torn between A Prophet and The White Ribbon for Foreign Language, thank god Let The Right One In wasn't eligible, or that category wuld have been a nightmare Smile

and WELL pleased with the 9 noms for Hurt Locker, an delighted that Renner got an acting nod. I was sure that he'd be snubbed for Viggo.

Nah, no way. Biegelow is getting Best Director and Cinematography, maybe musical editing?

It will be the moral victor, it only made about 10 mil.

I was proper engaged in the first hour of it, but I just didn't didn't get on with the last. I know you liked the sniper battle, Dangly, but I think that's where I started disliking the film, something just didn't feel right.

But, yeah, I guess it would be cool for the lowest budget film in the Oscars ever to win against the film with the biggest budget ever.
