Online Identities
So I have to write a 2000 word essay on how an online identity can differ from an actual identity in so many ways. Whether it be turning a photo of yourself black and white before putting up on Facebook to make your skin look better, or starting arguments behind a keyboard that you would never start in a physical meeting, a person's online identity can make them seem bigger, older, more powerful and charismatic, it can basically be the grounds for becoming anything you like in the eyes of others.
I figured, why not take some information straight from the horses mouth, and you guys are always generous in offering an intelligent hand. So how do you feel about it? The basic idea of a separate online identity, that is.
Any points would be greatly appreciated. I have a few weeks to write the essay, but it would be interesting to get background information from an online community that I feel a part of.
Thanks

I'm pretty sure I'm just as much a pretentious asshole in real life as well.

Re: Online Identities
My personality is much more malleable in real life. Online I come across as a bit condescending and wanky these days, but IRL I shift my tone to suit social situations. I can hang with less-than-intelligent fifty-something women in the workplace just as well as I can with Julio, Sebastian and Ivan in my Philosophy tutorial class. Maybe it means I'm a compromising shit who tries to hide his persistent and desperate pleas for social acceptance, but whatever.
Also, fat girl angle shots.
If you can squeeze some /b/ in there as well that could do well. Everyone plugs into the sick, racist, paedophilic hivemind regardless of where they stand anywhere else.

Re: Online Identities
Why do you guys think this is the case? Do you think people, when online, try to be the type of person that they would like to be in reality but can't get away with it? Why would somebody bother with things like fat girl angle shots etc when they know themselves that they do not look like that in reality, and chances are, most of their friends know it too?

Absorb it for a while. Maybe you won't want to write about it.
Good luck bro!

mcgugan wasn't on X360, he's a friend I met in college and I linked him to the hood when I made it last year.

Oh right!
We're still missing a good few members of the old forum. Its a shame really because when the old forum was good, it was really good.

Yup.
This one is getting a bit annoying now the avs and smileys are broken.
Anyone else want to make a proper interhood? I'd donate but I don't know anything about website design.
