Decided to post this discussion in the Teahouse, to keep to sensible debate at the expense of trolling and shouting matches. Hope Kaptain Kaviar doesn't mind.

I know some of you will be aware I'm an atheist. Recently, though, I've switched from the kind of atheist who, though not "militant" in the proper sense of the word, was quick to dismiss any good religion does in favour of highlighting (and exaggerating) the bad, to one who is of the opinion that, in it's purest sense, religion ...

So I have to write a 2000 word essay on how an online identity can differ from an actual identity in so many ways. Whether it be turning a photo of yourself black and white before putting up on Facebook to make your skin look better, or starting arguments behind a keyboard that you would never start in a physical meeting, a person's online identity can make them seem bigger, older, more powerful and charismatic, it can basically be the grounds for becoming anything you like in the eyes of others.

Who here takes an interest in politics in any capacity? If you do, where are you politically? I'm in the rather unworkable position of being both a socialist and libertarian, but justify the untenability of my position by calling myself an idealist. If push came to shove, it would be "workers of the world unite" time, baby.

I know that Sean is a strong libertarian and probably somewhere on the right economically, and Paul appears to be a whiny libertarian centre-leftist

Inglourious Basterds, Brilliance or referential ego trip?

I've been reading a good deal about film recently, from more, intellectual sources than usual shall we say, and discovered there's somewhat of a split between critics, and public alike.

Basically, people who hate the film, seem to believe that the film shos Tarantino's knowledge of all things cinema, but "lack of understanding of the real world". That he ignores all the serious questions, portrays the Nazi's as cariacature, ...

A thread for lovers of decent food (no I don't care what your favourite flavour of crisps are, that's not food, it's junk)

As most of you know, I'm in Spain at the moment and the food is lovely!

For example last night I had:

Broccoli and stilton soup to start

Sirloin steak with chips and peppercorn sauce

Crème brûlée and a nice brandy to finish

What nice food have you eaten recently and wht are some of your favourite dishes?

Steak is a firm favourite of mine and when in ...

Recently, i've played Saints Row 2, watched Natural Born Killers for the10th time or so, and read an interesting article, and it got me thinking. This whole Media/Violence link that the media have imagined up, do we actually think there's anything to it? I dont particularly feel the need to go out and kill people, or act ina particular way. Nor do i feel as though encountering any of these forms of media are desensitizing violence to me, (but maybe they are...) what do we think?

I'm looking for recommendations as i'm going book shopping today and i'm hoping people will be on the interhood before I go out.

It's 9:10am local time and I'm not even tired, although I woke up at 3:20pm yesterday, but went to bed at 6-7 that morning. It's really annoying, I wish I could just hit the pillow and sleep like pressing stand-by on a remote. Never really looked in to whether there's any factors of my lifestyle causing my irregular sleep patterns like diet and stuff, but honestly, it can't make too much of a difference can it?
